Part I. Krasnoyarsk region

Day 1

Arrival to Krasnoyarsk, group transfer, hotel accommodation, free time and lunch. Getting acquainted with Krasnoyarsk, the heart of Siberia, starts with the city tour. You will visit one of the main Krasnoyarsk symbols - the chapel of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa (also known as Paraskevi of Iconium), depicted on a 10-rouble banknote. The chapel is located on the Karaul’naya Mountain, offering the view upon the whole city. Probably, that is why this place is frequented by the guests of Krasnoyarsk.

*You will visit the historic part of the city with its architectural monuments dating back to the 18th - 19th centuries, with the former mansions of Siberian merchants and Maecenas and the monument to the founder of the city Andrey Dubenskii; you will visit the place where the city was founded, Epiphany cathedral, Theatrical square and many other things. There will be an excursion to the museum-estate of the great Russian artist V.Surikov. The solid two-storeyed log house with its whole interior and household items, as well as the spacious yard with all the dependencies are kept intact. The boy Vasya Surikov left this estate at the end of the 19th century to become later one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Free time in the city - souvenir shopping and walking in the beautiful streets.

Day 2

After breakfast you will be picked-up by your guide in the hotel lobby to start the excursion to the Ethnographical museum, considered to be one of the best historical museums in Siberia

*In 2001 the museum was opened after reconstruction, and now it astonishes with its modern look and priceless historic collection. Exactly this museum will be a kind of prelude to the coming trip. Rather informative than tiresome excursion will give the first impressions about the things you will see when going for the Sayan Ring tour.

Lunch at the restaurant

Leaving for the nature reserve "Pillars". Arrival to the border of the reserve, entering by bus the park (7 km). Then with the help of experienced guides-alpinists you will have a walking tour (3 km) along the tourist area, and the real die-hards can try climbing one of the pillars.

*During the excursion you will hear the legends and fables of the “pillar people”. The look of each rock is so unique and inimitable that practically all the Pillars have their names - Ded ('Grandfather'), Pervyi Stolb ('First Pillar'), Chetvertyi Stolb (‘Fourth Pillar’), Perya ('Feathers') - probably the most famous Pillars; L’vinye Vorota (‘Lion’s Gate’), Slonik (‘Small Elephant’) and others. Excursion area of the Pillars makes almost 1.5 thousand hectares. Having some rest in a log-house of a real "pillar man".

Returning to the city (7 km), dinner, returning to the hotel

*hotel accommodation ***, breakfast, lunch, dinner

! From May to June the nature reserve can be closed because of the high risk of tick bites, in this case the company will offer an alternative program to you.

Day 3

After breakfast the group bids goodbye to Krasnoyarsk (500 km) and starts the trip southwards via Divnogorsk city, crossing the Yenisei River along one of the biggest hydro-electric power stations in the world - Krasnoyarsk HEPS.

For extra payment you can visit banya or SPA, have a horse-riding

*Accommodation in the complex “Zharki”**, breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 4

The day starts with the trip to Shushenskoye settlement (total distance covered during this day - 430 km), which will be a kind of transition from civilization to the wild times. Here you will have an excursion round the state ethnographical museum-reserve “Shushenskoye” .

*The museum history is closely connected with the name of V.I. Lenin, who lived in Shushenskoye in exile from 1897 till 1900. This piece of history is situated on the bank of the Shush River, not far from its confluence with the Yenisei. Seven-hectares big area has numerous monuments of the countryside architecture: farmers’ houses, a small shop, a prison, a tavern… Altogether there are about 200 different wooden constructions. This place, amazing with the feel of the real Siberian village dating back to the turn of the 19th - 20th centuries, is fascinating even for a hardened skeptic. The tourists will visit the tavern (a surprise awaits them here), will see the real merchant store and will get acquainted with the workmanship of the craftspeople.

Then there will be a “tea-party” in a Siberian log house with traditional Siberian dishes.

Leaving for Tanzybei village. Hospitable hosts meet the guests with pies and a glass of vodka. After that they invite the visitors inside, show them around so that the tourists could get insight into the countryside life. Here you can see chickens and rabbits, drink the real farmhouse milk and have a look at the Siberian kitchen-garden. Lunch in the village house will surprise with the varieties of Siberian cuisine dishes.

It is a pity to leave hospitable village, but a lot of other interesting things are waiting for you! Then the route goes across the mountains of the West Sayan. In the past people believed that behind these mountains is the end of the world. The end or not the end - who knows, but the sceneries are breath-taking, you just can not turn your eyes away from the view. In June here and there one can see the sunny Siberian globeflowers, the flowers of bright orange color, adored by the Siberian people.

The group goes on towards Tuva. Here a magnificent view upon the mountain range Yergaki opens up for you. In the outlines of the mountain tops one can discern a figure of a lying man. It is a fairytale Hercules, the Sleeping Sayan. The history of the ancient warrior is narrated in one of the local legends.

The tourists will spend two days in the national park “Yergaki”

By the evening time the group arrives to Tuva. It is unbelievable, but as soon as the travellers cross the border with the republic, the landscape look changes dramatically. It gives you an impression that you are in some other era and on some other planet. The bigger part of Tuva doesn’t have any signs of the modern civilization, the steppes are stretching for hundreds of kilometers, now and then interlacing with the mountain peaks.

The first thing the group will visit when in Tuva is the Kurgan Arzhan-II. Several years ago archeological excavations of the intact tomb of a Scythian tsar and his wife made a sensation. The scientists found here beautiful golden jewelry, the amount and quality of which could be envied by many kings. The jewelry (total weight 20 kg), dated by the 7th century B.C., is the proof of the Scythian culture heyday.

The next stop will be 22 km away from Kyzyl city on the bank of the Bii-Khem River (if translated from Tuva language it means “Big Yenisei”). A similarly named tourist complex was arranged here. Accommodation in the real Tuva felt yourtas, assembled specially for the tourists. Here you will have feelings and thoughts about the mysterious, the past and the eternal.

After dinner the guests will watch the performance of traditional Tuva throat singing - “khoomei”. Throat singing is a fantastic ability of the Tuva people (and some other Siberian peoples) to produce simultaneously 2-3 musical sounds of different pitch and keep them 20-30 seconds. If you listen with closed eyes it is difficult to believe that a man can produce such sounds without any instrument.

Who of us haven't dreamt of the starry sky expanses? In the evening you can enjoy the Tuva starry sky in all its beauty with the help of a telescope established in the yourta complex. You will see many constellations, and in case astronomy is not your strong point, an experienced guide will help you. From time to time the heart of every city inhabitant is longing for something what we miss in our everyday life. Andwestareatthestars.

* accommodation in the yourta complex “Bii-Khem”, breakfast, lunch, dinner

PartII- Tuva

In the commotion of the big cities, in the deadlines of endless weekdays most of us don’t have the possibility to stay alone. We have forgotten what is silence, the grass rustle in the sunrise, how a sunset looks like and how the rivers are murmuring their songs. Do you believe that a stone, a tree, the wind and clouds in the sky are alive and you can talk to them? We have stopped listening to ourselves. We don’t feel being a part of Nature. Weeventhinkwedon’treallyneedit. Magnificence of the Tuva steppes, stillness of the Sayan Mountains, the sky on your shoulders and warm smell of the cedar taiga forest will conjure up this wringing your heart feel of belonging to the mystery of the Universe…

Day 5

Excursion to Kyzyl, the capital of Tuva (70 km). Visiting the geographic “Center of Asia”, which is marked by a memorial not far from the confluence of Bii-Khem (Big Yenissei) and Ka-Kehm (Small Yenissei) rivers. Here starts the famous river, crossing Siberia from the South to the North - Yenissei the Great. Visiting a Buddhist temple and listening to the Lama preaching, and then going to a Shaman clinic. If you wish you can get a shaman consultation to unveil the mystery of your future, to go through the ritual of purification and to check your health.

Lunch at a restaurant. Visiting the National museum of Tuva (excursion round the exposition “The Scythian Gold”, general information tour **); souvenir shopping, visiting the post office and mineral water spring in the vicinity of Kyzyl. The exposition "The Scythian Gold" is devoted to the famous kurgan "Arzhan-II". Its excavations were carried out in 2000 - 2003 by the specialists of Hermitage in collaboration with the German Archeological Institute. It features interesting archeological finds dating back to the Bronze age. They help to get the impression of the life, traditions and culture of the peoples which used to inhabit Tuva in the past. The treasures found in the kurgan (in total over 20 kg of golden items) have become a real sensation in the archeological world.

Free time in the city.

On the way, if you are lucky enough you can visit a yourta of a nomad-cattle-breeder. It will help to get acquainted with the everyday life of a traditional Tuva family (if there will be a possibility)

Returning to the yourta complex.

For dinner the guests can try the national dishes of Tuva cuisine.

And after the darkness sets in you will watch an interesting action - shaman kamlanie (conducting rituals). It is the communication with spirits, a real magic ritual at the fire, accompanied by plangent sounds and drum-beating. It is a rare phenomenon when several shamans simultaneously participate in kamlanie. During this ritual some will lapse into the meditation condition, some will experience purification and someone will just make a wish and it will come true.

* accommodation in the yourta complex “Bii-Khem”. Breakfast, lunch, dinner

** for extra payment

Day 6

This day the group will cross Tuva from the East to the West, following the road of the ancient nomads (440 km). Before the lunch time - a stop next to Khaiyrkan Mountain.

*It is one of the most sacred and honored places in Tuva. In 1992 it was chosen as an energetically active place and was consecrated by Dalai Lama XIV . At least once per year the local shamans come here to get “recharged” with the energy, to strengthen and purify the spirit. Why don't you use the possibility to do the same?

Lunch in the open air. Khakassia starts on the Sayansk pass at the height of 2206 meters. The following day the tourists will spend in the marvelous taiga at the tourist camp “Snezhnyi Bars” (‘Snow leopard’). It was built on the bank of the pure mountain river called Stoktysh . Here one can wade in the thick carpet of colorful moss, inhale the mountain air filled with the aroma of conifers and enjoy the traditional dishes of taiga cuisine.

· Accommodation at the tourist camp “Snezhnyi Bars”, breakfast, lunch, dinner

Lunch on the grass together with “Seven sisters” - centuries-old larches growing from one root. In the clearing where the larches grow there are a lot of edelweiss flowers, which for many people symbolize the mountains.

En-route the tourists will see the center of Buddhist culture, destroyed Ustuu-khuree temple. The temple is considered to be the best example of Buddhist architecture in Tuva. It knew no peer not only in Tuva, but in the area of the whole former Soviet Union. In 1930 after a special government resolution had been issued, the temple was closed and in 1937 it was destroyed. In 1999 the government of Russia, recognizing the historical and architectural value of the unique Ustuu-khuree temple, took a decision to restore it.

Khakassia starts on the Sayansk pass at the height of 2206 meters. The mountains are surrounded by the fabulous cedar taiga forest. The following 2 days the tourists will spend at the tourist camp “Snezhnyi Bars” (‘Snow leopard’), located at the altitude of 1250 meters above the sea level, in cedar-wood houses with stove heating. After dinner you will get acquainted with the instructors of "Snezhnyi Bars", amazing people, loving their nature and taiga forest; they know perfectly all the surrounding paths and they have profound knowledge of the curative herbs. The group will spend the rest of the day with them, singing songs accompanied by guitar and chatting till late at night. The warm smell of home will stroke, calm down and lull asleep in the cozy cedar houses of "Snezhnyi Bars".

Fromnowontheroutestartsto"complete the circuit", i.e. in fact the group starts its way back. But it doesn't mean returning yet: the trip goes on, and, who knows, may be the most interesting adventures are still awaiting you.

· Accommodation at the tourist camp “Snezhnyi Bars”. Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 7

When in taiga one can have a rest from the noise and fuss of big cities.

After breakfast - trekking at your choice in the surroundings: to the Mount Mayak (3 km one way, about 3 hours). During the excursion the tourists can try their hand in mountain climbing. Without any special equipment you will climb up almost vertical mountain. From the top you can enjoy the great panoramic view upon the local sights (bald peaks, the valley of the Big On River and Sayan mountain range).

Another option is to visit a hunter's hut (1 km one way, 2 hours). Here the tourists can find out more about everyday life of a modern hunter and his hunting secrets.

It is also possible to visit the hanging “bridge of Love” (2 km one way, 2 hours). The hanging bridge connects the banks of the Bolshoi On River. The river flows vehemently overcoming the rifts and rapids amidst the centuries old taiga. According to the local tradition a husband or a boy-friend has to carry his beloved lady across the “bridge of Love” over the waters of the mountain river. These taiga forest nooks will disclose their secrets and you will enjoy your time here.

And for the most active ones there is a tour to the lakes "Lyubimoe" ('Favourite') and "Kamenistoe" ('Rocky') (1.5 km on foot, 9 km by car, 3.5 hours). The stony beautiful path leading to the lake has a lot of medicinal herbs growing along it. Both lakes are closely connected. To get from one lake to another takes 25 minutes. During the passage the tourists will see a stone river and will be able to reach a cedar cone from the top of the cedar tree.

After lunch (if you set on your trip in late summer), you can pursue the occupation of the ancient people - picking-up mushrooms and berries. It is not really difficult to do here. Taiga is so generous that you will not have to look for the berries and mushrooms, everything grows literally under your feet. And certainly you will try the cedar nuts. Siberian cedar is a unique tree. The cedars, surrounding you, have been living for several centuries and have given food to dozens or even hundreds of generations of taiga inhabitants. Taiga forest gives you an alternative feeling of time and the feel of being united with the Nature, which you will want to experience more and more.

The clean taiga air makes you healthy, but the real panacea against all ailments is Russian banya. There is a steam sweating room with switches of birch, oak or coniferous twigs… After the hot sweating room one can dive into the ice-cold water of taiga river. And after banya it is so nice to relax and drink tea or kvass in the banya dressing room. Anyway, for those who are not ready for such a procedure, there is a more peaceful option - enjoying phyto-barrel **. Here you can just relax in a comfortable steam with herb extracts.

To crown it all you will spend your evening at the camp fire, looking at the primeval fire, and fathomless night sky with the sparkles of stars.

* Accommodation at the tourist camp “Snezhnyi Bars”, breakfast, lunch, dinner

** forextrapayment

PartIII. Khakassia

The ancient land of Khakassia surpasses the whole Siberia, if not Russia by the amount of archeological monuments. Here just from the road you can see the petroglyphs, depicting sacred rituals, kurgans or stone statues, which are still worshipped by the local people.
Feel the energy of Khakas land. You will perceive unearthly peace and inner purity, freedom and serenity of your thoughts. Suddenly you will recognize and simultaneously not recognize yourself. This world is a place full of mysteries. And you are a part of those enigmas, you just have to let it go. Khakassia is the center of positive impressions mixed with astonishment of fantastic proximity to the eternity.

Day8

Afterbreakfast - sayinggoodbyeto "SneznyiBars" andtaiga. En-route (242 km) the group will stop not far from a Khakas village, where Khurtuitaks tas memorial is established. By the lunch time - arrival to Kyug (in Khakas language it means "delight"), located at the distance of 137 km from Abakan. Again you get accommodated in yourtas, but this time they are wooden. They were also specially built for tourists. Lunch. Free time; those who want can have a horse ride (extra payment).

In the stillness of Khakas valley you can feel refreshment of your mind, and the sweet smell of flowers-de-luce will fill you with new energy.

Dinner with traditional Khakas cuisine dishes. After dinner - performance of Khakas national folklore band.

*Accommodation at the yourta complex "Kyug". Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day 9

Excursion to Khakas state museum-reserve "Kazanovka". The reserve appeared 15 years ago after the initiative of Leonid Yeremin, a historian, archeologist and a person simply not indifferent to Khakassia and sincerely loving his motherland. "Kazanovka" is an example how one should treat his historical and cultural heritage; it is a brand sought-for by scientists and tourists of the whole world.

It is difficult to believe, but you will really see 3-5 thousand years old petroglyphs. Moreover, it will be shown to you how archeologists copy these images onto paper for the further investigation; the pictures you will get you can take with you as a priceless souvenir. Besides, you will find out what is the meaning of the mysterious vertical rocks, sticking out here and there in the whole Khakassia. You will witness the real archeological excavations. In the reserve and its surroundings you can visit such archeological monuments like Poltakovskii stellarium and Safronovskii chaatas ('stone of war').

After lunch your archeological excursion will go on: you will see the sacred symbols of the ancient shamans and the religious stela Akh-Tas ('White Stone'), which possesses a powerful curative energy field.

* Accommodation at the yourta complex "Kyug". Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day 10

Leaving the camp. After 2 hours you will get to Abakan, the capital of Khakassia (140 km). Visiting Republic Ethnographical museum, featuring the unique collection of the stone statues - aftersounds of the ancient rituals and convictions. It is considered that many of these statues have preserved their power.

From Abakan the route goes to the Valley of the Tsars, where about 30 kurgans of the 3rd-4th centuries B.C. are located. The culminating point of our trip will be the Big Salbyk kurgan, which was originally erected over the tomb of a noble family belonging to the Tagar tribe and then found by the archeologists in 1954-1956. It was 0,5 km in diameter and 11,5 meters high. The weight of the vertically standing stones was 60 tons.

Lunch near the Big Salbyk kurgan with the overview of the Valley of the Tsars. GoingbacktoKrasnoyarsk (450 km).

Don't try to "digest" at once everything you have seen during the trip - it will come later. The first and foremost is the strong emotional charge. And let it suffice till the next trip to Siberia.

National dishes of Russian, Tuva and Khakas cuisine are an intrinsic part of our program. Traditional Russian dishes are pancakes, fried and baked pies, pel’meni (a kind of ravioli), pickled cucumbers, Russian salad, shchi-soup, berry drinks, etc. In winter the main food for Khakas people is meat, and in summer - dairy products. They also love bread. Soups (‘ugre’) and bouillons (‘mun’) with boiled meat are very popular. The most popular is cereals soup (“charba ugre”) and barley soup (“koche ugre”). The Tuva people's diet is also based on meat and milk products. Actually, they eat only meat, the rest is just complimentary to it. Especially popular are the dishes presenting the combination of meat and dough. For example, a soup with meat and noodles (“uzken bydaa”), steamed pel’meni (“boozy”) and regular pel’meni (“manchy”), fried meat pies (“khuuzhury”) and chopped meat with dough (“tyrtkan”), etc.

Besides, Tuva people drink milk vodka - “araga”, made from sour milk; they also eat “boorzaki” - pieces of dough fried in oil and scones as a separate dish; “soktaan dalgan” (ground barley). Their cuisine also includes blood-pudding, green tea with milk with addition of either salt or butter, sometimes both. The role of diary products as well as of the meat is great in the daily diet in Tuva. Local people have developed different ways of making the diary products: cheese (‘byshtak’), kefir (‘tarak’), sour clotted milk (‘khoitpak’), dried cottage cheese in solid form (‘kurut’) and loose form (‘aarzhy’), etc.

Mosquitoes and ticks

There are not so many mosquitoes in Tuva and Khakassia; after long rainy spells they can become more active, but this is a rare phenomenon for Tuva and Khakassia. In the high mountains where the camp “Snezhnyi Bars” is situated, there are almost no mosquitoes or midges. Ticks can be found in Tuva, where the special anti-tick spraying is done , and in Khakassia taiga forest regions, but we do not stop there. In Yergaki the ticks are normally rare, but recently their population is increasing. In the mountains there are almost none of them. Anyway, we give to all the tourists personal protective means and recommend to make sure that their hands and feet are covered, especially in the evening when the mosquitoes are active most of all. The cost of the tour includes the insurance against tick-borne encephalitis.

Water

In the tour area the water is clean enough, and doesn’t require additional filtering before usage. During the tour you will be provided with pure drinking water (with gas and without) in unlimited amount, thus you will not need to carry it around with you.
