Meeting Siberia

Acquaintance with Siberia starts in Krasnoyarsk. When you arrive to Krasnoyarsk, the city can seem familiar even if you have never been here. Don't wonder: at least once you have seen it when you had a 10-rouble banknote in your hands. It depicts one of the city bridges - "Kommunalnyi" and the symbol of Krasnoyarsk - the chapel of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa (Paraskevi of Iconium)

The tourists are picked-up at the railway station at 07-09:00 o’clock, then they leave their things in the luggage room. Accommodation at the hotel, incl. group rooms **, breakfast** after the tourists request.

Leaving for the nature reserve "Pillars". Arrival to the border of the reserve, walking to the reserve (5 km). During the walk your guide will tell the history of the reserve. In 2010 the park celebrated its 70th anniversary.

Then with the help of experienced guides-alpinists you will have a walking tour (3 km) along the tourist area, and the real die-hards can try climbing one of the pillars. During the excursion you will hear the legends and fables of the “pillar people”. The look of each rock is so unique and inimitable that practically all the Pillars have their names - Ded ('Grandfather'), Pervyi Stolb ('First Pillar'), Perya ('Feathers') - probably the most famous Pillars; Takmak and others. Lunch (lunch box) in a log-house of a "pillar man", relaxation.

After the eventful and active tour the tourists will be accompanied to the reserve border (5 km), where they will start their bus city tour.

In the evening you can visit the most interesting places of Krasnoyarsk

*One of them is the Karaul mountain, where the chapel of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa is located. The previous name of the mountain is Kum-Tigei hill. Exactly here in the early 17th century the Cossacks - city founders have established the watch tower. The stone chapel in honor of Krasnoyarsk defenders appeared in 1865. In the 21st century to commemorate the founders of the city it was decided to establish a canon a bit lower than the chapel. Every day the canon makes one shot. From Karaul mountain a marvelous view opens up upon the city and theYenissei River.

Arrival to the railway station. At 20:00 embarkation on the train ? 124 Krasnoyarsk - Abakan (economy class, business class compartment**). Dinner**.

*accommodation on the train, lunch

Day 2

The way to Yegarki

The guests are picked-up in Abakan, the capital of Khakassia. For the long time the city has been known as Ust'-Abakanskoe settlement. In the early 20th century the settlement got the status of the city and a new name after the river where it stands.

After breakfast - a small city tour.

Then - leaving for Shushenskoye

*The small settlement is famous for the ethnographic museum-reserve. A real Siberian village of the turn of the 19th - 20th centuries has been well preserved here. The houses with all the necessary household items could be used for living even nowadays. This place is also known as the exile place for Lenin (V.Ul'yanov).

In the village of the museum-reserve there are a lot of surprises for the guests: visiting the tavern and getting acquainted with the local crafts. At parting the tourists will be invited to the Siberian log house for a cup of tea and some Siberian treat.

Lunch in Tanzybei village. The hospitable hosts are welcoming the tourists with the pies and a glass of vodka. The hosts will invite the guests into their house, will show them around so that the visitors could get insight into the countryside life. Lunch in the village house will surprise with the varieties of Siberian cuisine dishes.

Then the route goes across the mountains of the West Sayan. In the past people believed that behind these mountains is the end of the world. The end or not the end - who knows, but the sceneries are really breath-taking, you just cannot turn your eyes away from the view. In the outlines of the mountain tops one can discern a figure of a lying man. It is a fairytale Hercules, the Sleeping Sayan. The history of the ancient warrior is narrated in one of the local legends.

The tourists will spend two days in the national park “Yergaki”

* It is traditional tourist center of the regional south and the mostly frequented part of the West Sayan. The highest peaks here are Aradanskii peak (2466 m) and Zvezdnyi peak (2265 m). The place of pilgrimage for all the artists and those who appreciate the Beauty is the pass of the Artists. It offers the big panoramic view upon the central part of the mountain range Yergaki and the valley of the Left Taigash River. The mountain peaks Ptitsa (‘Bird’), Zvezdnyi (‘Starry’), Zub Drakona (‘Dragon Tooth’), Konus and Zerkal’nyi (‘Mirror’) are spread before the eyes. In the center far below two sharp-pointed peaks are clearly visible, the so called Bratya (‘Brothers’) or Parabola. At their foot there are two beautiful lakes - the Lake of the Mountain Spirits and the Lake of Artists. The nature park “Yergaki” is undoubtedly the pearl of Siberia. The real connoisseurs of uniquely beautiful natural nooks have to see with their own eyes this amazing place.

Arrival to the starting point (621 km, tourist camp “Tushkanchik” (‘Jerboa’), changing the clothes, leaving the things in the luggage room, then trekking along the mountain-taiga path 8 kilometers to Svetloye (‘Light’) lake.

*Svetloye lake resembles in its shape a church cupola. That is why it was named Svetloye (=sacred).

Arrival to the camping site of the tent complex, accommodation in double and 4-persons tents, dinner. Eveningcamp-fire.

* accommodation in the tent complex, breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day 3

Conquering the Bird (‘Ptitsa’)

Getting up at 9 a.m. Morning washing, exercises and getting ready for the trekking to one of the observation points - the shoulder of the Ptitsa peak. The whole way is visible from the camp. The path goes up the mountain. After the forest area is left behind you will ascend to the altitude of 1700 meters above the sea level. Immense horizons of taiga mountain ranges, forests and lakes are simply mesmerizing. The path is getting more narrow and tourists go in single file, starting their ascend to the pass of Ptitsa peak. Having reached the top the tourists will really see the gigantic stone bird - an eagle, which is going to touch the ground with his stone feet and fold his wings. Lunch en-route (packed lunch).

During the tour it will be possible to see the lake of the Mountain Spirits, the rocks “Two Brothers” and the cross-piece between them - Parabola. Here the rocks resemble a tortoise, a camel and deserted castles. The 10 kmlongtrekkingtakesabout 4-5 hours.

First thing to do after you have returned to the camp is to have some rest and a good dinner. Preparation for the evening banya and swimming in the lake!!

The day is crowned by songs and narrations, games and contests near the evening camp-fire.

* accommodation in the tent complex, breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 4

Meeting the Dinosaur

New morning, new day and new impressions. After breakfast the group sets for a new trip to the highest point of the area - the Dinosaur Mountain (12 km distance, 7-8 hours en-route). The route goes by Svetloye lake, then uphill and descends to Zolotarnoye (or Malakhitovoe) lake. This big lake is situated outside the forest. Lunch en-route (packed lunch). The next place of attraction is the rock “Zub Drakona”, impressing by its concave rocky walls. It is the place for the Russian and world championships in mountain-climbing. Dinner at the camp-fire. Evening chatting, exchanging the impressions, looking through the photos made during the day - all this makes the holidays warm and friendly.

* accommodation in the tent complex, breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 5

The Sayans and Tuva

After breakfast the tourists say goodbye to the camp, Ptitsa and Zvezdnyi peaks, promising that they definitely would return to Yergaki again. Eight kilometers trekking (2-3 hours) to the bus, picking up the things, changing the clothes and going on with the program. Lunchen-route.

At the border of Krasnoyarsk region and Tuva there is an observation point located, offering a wonderful view upon the beauties of the Tuva republic. It is unbelievable, but as soon as the travellers cross the border with the republic, the landscape look changes dramatically. It gives you an impression that you are in some other era and on some other planet. The bigger part of Tuva doesn’t have any signs of the modern civilization, the steppes are stretching for hundreds of kilometers, now and then interlaced with the mountain peaks.

The first thing the group will visit when inTuva is the Kurgan Arzhan-II.

*Several years ago archeological excavations of the intact tomb of a Scythian tsar and his wife made a sensation. The scientists found here beautiful golden jewelry, the amount and quality of which could be envied by many kings. The jewelry (total weight 20 kg) dated by the 7th century B.C. is the proof of the Scythian culture heyday.

The next stop will be 22 km away from Kyzyl city on the bank of the Bii-Khem River (if translated from Tuva language it means “Big Yenisei”). A similarly named tourist complex was arranged here. Tuva felt yourtas were assembled specially for the accommodation of the visitors. Here you can feel as a real nomad, the difference is only that there are all the usual civilization blessings nearby.

After dinner the guests will witness the performance of “khoomei” **

* The local people have a unique ability. They can produce simultaneously 2-3 musical sounds of different pitch and keep them 20-30 seconds. It is called “throat singing” or “khoomei”, and many from the audience are taken aback by this phenomenon. It is difficult to believe that a man can produce such sounds without any instrument.

* accommodation in the yourta complex “Bii-Khem”, breakfast, lunch, dinner

** for extra payment

Day 6

Center of Asia

The day starts with the trip to Kyzyl, the capital of Tuva. There are several interesting places here to see. First and foremost of them is the pride of the city - “Center of Asia” memorial.

*The globe with the depiction of continents has a special image of Tuva and Kyzyl. Geographically the center is located on the Yenisei River bank. Exactlyherethememorialissituated.

Different religions are co-existing peacefully in Tuva. That is why it is no wonder that you can first visit a Buddhist temple and listen to the Lama preaching, and then go to a Shaman. Even nowadays the shamans have a big significance in the life of the Tuva people. From the time immemorial the shamans were the mediators between the spirits and the people, healing both the body and soul from illnesses. Nowadays in Kyzyl there are special shaman clinics established. Anyone can get a consultation from a shaman.

Visiting the Republic museum of Tuva (excursion round the exposition “The Scythian Gold”, general information tour **). It features interesting archeological finds dating back to the Bronze age. They help to get the impression of the life, traditions and culture of the peoples which used to inhabit Tuva in the past.

Lunch, after which the tourists can do souvenir shopping and have a walk in the city.

In the afternoon the group will set off for Dus-Khol’ (Svatikovo). En-route there will be a short stop near the mineral water spring Tos-Bulag. You can swim and do some mud-soaking in the lake, famous for its water. The water of Dus-Khol’ has high mineral content, its mud possesses curative abilities. Rapa (the name for strongly salt-saturated water) resembles glycerin. Rapa contains magnesium and natrium, it also contains high amount of bromine. The qualities of this water are equal to those of the Dead Sea.

For dinner the guests can try the national dishes of Tuva cuisine. And after the darkness sets in you will watch an interesting action. Shamans will be conducting their rituals and communicating with the spirits. During this ritual some will lapse into the meditation condition, some will experience purification. It is a unique spectacle, which is perceived differently, but no one is left untouched.**

* accommodation in the yourta complex “Bii-Khem”, breakfast, lunch, dinner
** for extra payment

Day 7

Along the road of nomads

This day the group will follow the road of the ancient nomads to cross Tuva from the East to the West and approach Khakassia. You will have to go across the mountain pass. Many people believe that these places are rich in powerful energy centers. Not far from one of such centers you will have a stop - next to Khaiyrkan Mountain. In 1992 it was chosen as an energetically active place and was consecrated by Dalai Lama XIV. At least once per year the local shamans come here to get “recharged” with the energy, to strengthen and purify the spirit. Everyone coming here can feel the strong energy of this area.

Lunch in the open air. Khakassia starts on the Sayansk pass at the height of 2206 meters. The following day the tourists will spend in the marvelous taiga at the tourist camp “Snezhnyi Bars” (‘Snow leopard’). It was built on the bank of the pure mountain river called Stoktysh . Here one can wade in the thick carpet of colorful moss, inhale the mountain air filled with the aroma of conifers and enjoy the traditional dishes of taiga cuisine.

Accommodation at the tourist camp “Snezhnyi Bars”, breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 8

Taiga pleasures

When in taiga one can have a rest from the noise and fuss of big cities. Communication with the pristine nature gives back to the people the inner harmony. After breakfast the tourists will go to the mountain lake “Marankul” (16 km both ways), located at the altitude of 1520 meters above the sea level. The water in the lake is warmed up to 12-18 degrees. The route goes through cedar taiga. The tourists will also cross the hanging “bridge of Love”. The hanging bridge connects the banks of the Bolshoi On River. The river flows vehemently overcoming the rifts and rapids amidst the centuries old taiga. According to the local tradition a husband or a boy-friend has to carry his beloved lady across the “bridge of Love” over the waters of the mountain river.

Lunch on the lake. A walk in the tent complex on the shore of Marankul lake in the cedar forest Leisure on the lake: swimming and rafting. Returning to the tourist camp.

The clean taiga air makes you healthy, but the real panacea against all ailments is Russian banya. There is a steam sweating room with switches of birch, oak or coniferous twigs… After the hot sweating room one can dive into the ice-cold water of taiga river. And after banya it is so nice to relax and drink tea or kvass in the banya dressing room. Anyway, for those who are not ready for such a procedure, there is a more peaceful option - enjoying phyto-barrel **. Here you can just relax in a comfortable steam with herb extracts.

After dinner there will be evening camp-fire. Isn’t it wonderful - living fire, fathomless night sky with the sparkles of stars and the air filled with the aroma of conifers… It all gives the impression of being united with the nature, and you will feel like returning to the fairytale taiga again and again.

* Accommodation at the tourist camp “Snezhnyi Bars”, breakfast, lunch, dinner

** for extra payment

Day 9

Closing the ring

In the morning the travellers can enjoy cosmetic procedures **, health-caring massage**, phyto-barrel**. You can try something new - honey body wraps**. If you set on your trip in late summer, you can pursue the occupation of the ancient people - picking-up mushrooms and berries. It is really not difficult to do here. Taiga is so generous that you will not have to look for the berries and mushrooms, everything grows literally under your feet. And certainly you will try the cedar nuts. Siberian cedar is a unique tree. The cedars, surrounding you, have been living for several centuries and have given food to dozens or even hundreds of generations of taiga inhabitants. Taiga forest gives you an alternative feeling of time and the feel of being united with the Nature, which you will want to experience more and more.

After lunch the tourists will check-out from "Snezhnyi Bars" and will go down to the valley. On the way they will make a stop near the memorial Khurtuitakh tas.

*It is a special stone, up till now worshipped by the Khakas women wishing to give birth to a child. In 2003 after the request of the local people the monument was returned from the Ethnographical museum back to its original place.

Our trip will come to its end after returning to Abakan. Dinner. Performance of Khakas folklore band (after special request) **. Embarkation on the train ? 124 (economy, business class compartment**), leaving for Krasnoyarsk

* accommodation on the train, breakfast, lunch, dinner

In Krasnoyarsk region every summer month is good and beautiful in its own way, that is why the dates of the tour depend exclusively on your preferences.

The climate of Khakassia is extremely continental with cold winter and hot summer, with big temperature and precipitation fluctuations. The amount of sunny days is almost equal to that of the Crimea. In the steppe the summer lasts from late May till the middle of September, in the mountains - from mid-June till the end of August. The hottest month is July (average daily temperature in the steppe is about +200 ?). Indian summer comes in the second half of September and lasts rather long.

Extremely continental climate of Tuva stipulates dry summer with the temperature up to + 400 ?and in winter there is little snow with temperature falling down as to -500 C.

Continental climate governs in Yergaki. Climatic conditions here are varying. Summer in the mountains is just 1-2 months long.

In summer if the weather is fine it is warm, even hot, and in bad weather the temperature can be as low as 00 ?and even colder. Average temperature of July in the mountain is +17...+180 ?. The weather is not stable, very often storms happen (which can be dangerous during the mounting ascending); it can be foggy, with a lot of precipitation. Sometimes it can rain for the whole week without stopping. But winter is milder here as in the valley, although from September till mid-June the mountain slopes are covered with snow.

May is very beautiful with the young and fresh leaves appearing; everything is blooming, and in the mountains you can see the snow. During the day it is warm, but it cools down by the evening time..

  • June is also a blooming month, and every week the colors are changing. Normally this is the time of stable fine weather.
  • July is the hottest month, but sometimes it can rain for a week. As a rule in July the temperature is stable and warm both during the day and at night. At the end of the month the steppe starts to dry out.
  • Till the middle of August the weather is still warm, but then it starts to get colder. It is getting more chilly at night. At the end of August the colors begin to change again, the trees turn red and yellow. There are a lot of mushrooms and berries during this period.
  • September is very colorful with predominant colors of red, yellow and green. Usually beginning of September is marked by warm weather, but the nights are already cool. In the second half of September long-lasting rains can come and the temperature gets down to +50 ?.

Traditional Russian dishes are pancakes, fried and baked pies, pel’meni (a kind of ravioli), pickled cucumbers, Russian salad, shchi-soup, berry drinks, etc. In winter the main food for Khakas people is meat, and in summer - dairy products. They also love bread. Soups (‘ugre’) and bouillons (‘mun’) with boiled meat are very popular. The most popular is cereals soup (“charba ugre”) and barley soup (“koche ugre”). The Tuva people's diet is also based on meat and milk products. Actually, theyeatonlymeat, therestisjustcomplimentarytoit. Especially popular are the dishes presenting the combination of meat and dough. Forexample, asoupwithmeatandnoodles(“uzkenbydaa”), steamedpel’meni(“boozy”) andregularpel’meni(“manchy”), friedmeatpies(“khuuzhury”) andchoppedmeatwithdough(“tyrtkan”), etc.

Besides, Tuva people drink milk vodka - “araga”, made from sour milk; they also eat “boorzaki” - pieces of dough fried in oil and scones as a separate dish; “soktaan dalgan” (ground barley). Their cuisine also includes blood-pudding, green tea with milk with addition of either salt or butter, sometimes both. The role of diary products as well as of the meat is great in the daily diet in Tuva. Local people have developed different ways of making the diary products: cheese (‘byshtak’), kefir (‘tarak’), sour clotted milk (‘khoitpak’), dried cottage cheese in solid form (‘kurut’) and loose form (‘aarzhy’), etc.

Mosquitoes and ticks

There are not so many mosquitoes in Tuva and Khakassia; after long rainy spells they can become more active, but this is a rare phenomenon for Tuva and Khakassia. In the high mountains where the camp “Snezhnyi Bars” is situated, there are almost no mosquitoes or midges. Ticks can be found in Tuva, where the special anti-tick spraying is done , and in Khakassia taiga forest regions, but we do not stop there. In Yergaki the ticks are normally rare, but recently their population is increasing. In the mountains there are almost none of them. Anyway, we give to all the tourists personal protective means and recommend to make sure that their hands and feet are covered, especially in the evening when the mosquitoes are active most of all.

In the tour area the water is clean enough, and doesn’t require additional filtering before usage. During the tour you will be provided with pure drinking water (with gas and without) in unlimited amount, thus you will not need to carry it around with you.
